THis week (so far) in Pole :)

Happy Hump Day!  Well the end of hump day.  I’m still on Cloud 9 and deliciously sore from an epic class last night.  We did a strength training circuit and it was INTENSE! We did rows, “tucks”, ab lifts with the Fly Gym, superman push ups (owie my poor inner thighs!!!) and a lot more.  I love these classes, they really help build your strength for pole and we just have such a good time.  We also danced in the backlight and it makes you feel twice as sexy. 😉  It’s really nice to get such a variety in class.  A killer workout and warm up, followed with some trick practice and a good 20 minutes of free dancing is a perfect workout if you ask me.  The euphoria you feel afterwards is epic.  No gym session does that for me 🙂

So on to the news!  UPA (www.unitedpoleartists.com) has made my day.  They have a new feature on their website called “Pole Talk”, it’s basically like an all Pole FB.  I am starting to hate regular FB and all I really check is the “All Things Pole” field, LOL so this is a dream come true!  It’ still very new and people are still joining but so far it seems cool!  The video is below.  Oh and you have to be a member (FREE) of their website in order to see the Pole Talk tab.  Check it out!

FUNNY STUFF!!

I LOVE Cleo, she’s cute and has an attitude and is so friendly.  I was so excited that she responded to a comment I made on a video of hers. She gave me renewed hope for splits!  Did you know she was 30 when she finally got her splits and she’s 34 now.  Also, she’s a tall girl at 5’9″. What a month for March so far!  We just started our newest DC (daily challenge) for push-up, planks and dips.  Gotta get that body strong and swoll! LOL  Check out the videos below and I put together a little playlist for you of what I’m digging right now.

Just to make March a little more filled with Madness, I’m throwing out a handstand challenge too.  I HATE and FEAR handstands like I fear a giant spider descending from the ceiling or my husband leaving dirty dishes in the sink.  But for the love of god, I am a 34 year old woman and I WILL conquer them 🙂 To help you out wherever you are in your handstanding journey, watch the video below.  She has some awesome tips for all levels of acrobatics, including mine (i.e. too scared to kick my feet off the ground).  It’s long but worth it!  Just think how strong you will all be after this month! 🙂  DC PUSH UP

Saturday night Pole-licious mobbed the BeSpun Night of Sexy Performances.  It was a good show.  For $7 you can’t beat a night of pole.  So much booty bouncing!  So many body waves and some amazing strength sprinkled in with it.  I loved that Be Spun had girls from all levels of their classes dance.  Aside from a the super long space in between dances and the freaking outrageous drink prices ($18 vodka cran OUCHIE!) it was a lot of fun!

Now I’m feeling inspired to get down on some floorwork!   Floor work is oh so sexy and while it looks seemingly easy, it’s very hard and a very good workout.  Put on your slinky leggings and dance and slide and feel your way around the floor.  Play with your cat pounces, experiment with tik toks and clocks and just roll around and feel something new and fun and see how it works for you.  I JUST finished a 1/2 hour freestyle time and needless to say even tho I “just danced”, I’m exhausted LOL, but I think I have the beginnings of this adorable little (HARD AS HELL) floor move. Practice makes perfection 🙂 and I apologize that Facebook REFUSES to let me embed a video dammit, you have to click the link 😦

Release the Sexy!

I may just be late to the party but the past few months I feel like there has been an overwhelming acceptance of the sexy side of pole.  For a long time I felt I was reading story after story about the controversy of being sexy and that being sensual and sexual in your dance means that you can’t be taken seriously as an athlete. …but lately I notice more and more videos are dripping with sensuality and awe inspiring displays of strength.  I subscribe to a Facebook feed called All Things Pole (subscribe to it if you don’t already!!), Barbie started it and lately I see more flashy glitter heels, more sexy dances being posted filled with slow sexy cat pounces, signature booty pops and mesmerizing hip circles.  Why am I writing about it? It just makes me smile to see the freedom and power revealed when inhibitions are checked at the door and their sexy is unleashed.  What do you think?

I’ve been back and forth between a couple of studios and maybe it’s coming back to Pole-licious and the sultry feel of our little studio. The environment i so loving and welcoming.  The dusky lighting, our living starry sky and the warm dim lighting.  The focus is always on the dance and how we feel.  We always have enough time to work on our tricks but we also take the time to dance ourselves into breathless abandon. Since coming back to pole there hasn’t been a night I’ve come to class that I haven’t left with that feeling of floating in a pool of warm water.  Something about the energy we create is so utterly beautiful, sensual and calming.

We’ve had some very very fun classes the past couple of weeks.  My favorite being the backlight classes.  Here are a couple pics blow.  We warmed up with lots of booty pops, hip circles, sexy bridges, push ups and planks.  We were all a sweaty mess.  The room was literally steamy!

Barbie and Daniela recently went to Kelly Yvonne’s new show Seven.  I her it is full of temptations and desires. Can’t wait to hear about it this week and I vow to go to the next one!  Barbie tagged a bunch of songs and shared them with us.  Maybe one will inspire you for your dance this week?

Pole Show LA 2014

Last Saturday was the the illustrious and famous 5th annual Pole Show La that Be Spun puts on.  This was the 2nd year the show was at 333 Live.  We decided the have a viewing party instead of going to the show.  It was free and we only had to wear our finest PJ’s, eat pizza, drink wine and have pie.  All fat and calorie free mind you 😉 The countdown for the show was up on the Big Screen, everything was hooked up and ready to go and at 8:15 we started checking FB.  No show yet.  Ok fine, more wine and pizza an hour later still no show . THE FEED NEVER WOKED.  Boo hiss.

To be honest, it didn’t matter that much that the feed wasn’t working and we couldn’t watch the show 😀  Ladies night was a success in my book.  We ate pizza, cookies, Shannon’s amazing bruschetta (recipe below) and drank wine (the most important part).  It was so nice to just hang around the kitchen island cackling and having fun.  I’m going to download the show this weekend and watch it for $1.99. 🙂  I did manage  to find a few videos via FB and wanted to post for your viewing pleasure.  Sienna Spaulding posted a 10 minute behind the scenes video along with her performances.  Very cool 🙂 and Michelle Shimmy killed it even with a broken rib.  She’s my new pole crush, actually, I think all the aussie chicks are.  I love how they embrace the sexy style, booty poppin’, hip swaying, hair flippin’ essence of sexy that is pole (wow, that was a mouthful).

Sarah Jade, who I haven’t watched much of made my jaw freakin’ drop!  She remind me of Alethea Austin but with a little bit different style.  I may be developing another crush LOL

Last weekend was an aerial kind of weekend and I love how it’s gaining popularity.  Pink performed in a sexy little number complete with aerial silks and if you recognized poles in Katy Perry’s interestingly strange performance you were right.

Shannon’s Bomb-Bay Balsamic Bruschetta

8 roma or plum tomatoes diced

1/3 cup chopped fresh basil

1 small pearl onion

1/4 cup shredded parmesan

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar

1 tsp olive oil (Shannon used avocado oil)

kosher salt

black pepper

1 loaf of french or Italian bread

Mix everything together gently and let marinate in the fridge or at least an hour.

SO GOOD!!!

New Year Revolutions ;)

Happy New Year Kittens!

2013 was a helluva year.  I started a new job that is an actual big girl job.  Between working late and having to go in early I had to take a little hiatus from pole only getting my classes once in a while and too tired to pole at home.   Not to mention some unfortunate financial circumstances.  Between work and weight gain from slacking off at the gym I decided to kick 2014 into high gear, or at least give it my very best effort.  🙂  I’m educating at least 2 days  week to poling and 3 days a week to stretch and 4 days a week at the gym to cross train.  I’m join to order Cleo’s Rockin Legs and Abs and will post my progress for splits.  2014 is going to be a year dedicated to doing the things I love, getting my pole body back and learning to love me again.

Here’s my pole plan for tomorrow:

-warm up with a short free dance

-25 dancers squats (toes out, legs wide)

-10 spiderman push ups or regular push ups

-Climbs–silly side and dominant side – depending on ho tall your pole is, I’m 6 feet tall with short ceilings so I do one climb up and “squat” for 10 on both sides.

-pole hangs -5 each side

-layback crunches – 10

 

I’m going to run through this 2-3 times and then practice:

-spins (fireman, backhook, inside hook and variations)

-over head v or fliptini

-invert

I’m sure that will be more than enough to start LOL.  and if you are feeling like I am just know that IT DOES COME BACK!!!  I’m trying to remember the journey and sometimes we take a few steps back or rest along the way and that is ok!

Hot for Teacher

LOL, not sure if the title fits, but i’m on an 80’s kick.  you can tell by the abuse of Bon Jovi’s “Bad Medicine” blaring from my car. 🙂  Life has been crazy busy!!!  There are few nights that I’m at home now and it seems with every week there has been more to do.  I was asked to be in a wedding by a dear dear friend of mine.  I was very touched and can’t wait to help her!!!

Oh! AND!!!  I started teaching pole!  Wow!!!  I have wanted to teach since the day I walked in the door at Pole-licious and knew I was home.

Barbara put me through teacher “boot camp”.  It was a short, intensive training and boy is it really intense.  Teaching is very different than how I had first imagined.  I have forgotten how hard beginning tricks are when you are a beginner and I defenitely didn’t realize the amount of steps there are to breaking them down…SAFELY!

My first class, I was a nervous wreck.  Arrived at the studio super early, lit candles, put on some music to clean and set up to, I even wrote my entire floor workout down so I wouldn’t forget any step or ab or martini, goddess, etc. 🙂  To be honest, I wanted to cry I was so nervous.  Nervous my workout wouldnt be hard enough.  Nervous I wouldn’t teach tricks right.  Nervous my music sucked.  You name it.  I was a wreck!!

I had a few students my first class and even a brand new girl!  They were all thoroughly sweaty and breathless by the end of class and all danced out.  my new girls gave me a hug and said they would be back.  My veteran, also a friend I have been dancing with since my start at Pole-licious said “I rocked!” and she got a great workout.  I left that night walking on air.  I couldn’t believe how great I felt about myself after leaving.  Especially having Miss Kitty Betsey pay me such a wonderful compliment.

Fast forward, I have been teaching for about 3 months now.  I’ve become a little more relaxed and don’t come to class with a defined plan anymore.  I have my regular students who come to see me and they all want my butt kicking, drenched in sweat workout and it makes me feel great to see my little hotties growing and nailing their tricks they have been working so hard on.  To be a part of those magic “Holy s&*t!!  I got it!!!  Did you see that!!!! ” *happy dance* Those little moments and seeing the light in my students eyes are why I love teaching!  each and every girl that comes through the door are experiencing something different that day.  happy, sad, mad..whatever it may be, it’s my job to put a smile on their face and to let that tiger off it’s leash for 90 minutes.  My students put a smile on my face and make my bad day go away.  They would never know it by my face, but a few weeks ago, I came in feeling defeated from my day and from stress that has been plaguing me from the beginning of the year.  After class i found myself smiling, even though I hadn’t tricked the entire class.  It dawned on me, my students are my therapy.  They bring out the best in me for those 90 minutes and for that I am deeply grateful to all you ladies!

The Key to Nailing Advanced Pole Tricks

Hi Sexies!!!  I realized today it has been a whole month since I have written anything!  I’m so sorry!!!  I was going to write something and I came across this blog written on Studio Veena by Kira Lamb and could not resist sharing!.  It gives some great tips on structuring your journey and as always, it’s not a competition ❤  Hope all you hotties are doing great!

 

A POLE ADDICT’S GUIDE TO RE(DIS)COVERY: Step 10

Continued to take personal inventory and, when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.

I had a brand new massage client (pole dancer) last week that complained of relentless stabbing pains around her right shoulder blade. It was the kind of pain and discomfort that kept her awake at night. As she described the nature of her injury, she told me that she’s only been pole dancing for 3 months. And she’s convinced her injury was caused by kicking up into inversions when she “obviously wasn’t strong enough” to be inverting anyway.  While blaming her overly eager attitude for dulling her own better judgement, she was also surprised that inversions were being taught so early in her training.

 

As insatiable pole addicts it’s hard not to want to excel at warped speed.  We want to bypass the tedium of the basics and master competition-level skills like the big dogs of our industry.  But all that passion and reckless determination can hinder our own true potential.  As athletes and artists, it’s important to honestly assess our training methods and determine if they’re really working to our advantage.

Of course, pain, bumps, bruises, injuries, learning curves and training plateaus come with the territory.  But how might we re-think our training in order to maximize our time on the pole, advance steadily and sustain fewer injuries and setbacks?

 

FUNDAMENTALS: Learning proper alignment is like learning the alphabet of dance. It’s our foundation. Ideal alignment is being able to find the most mechanically efficient positioning for the body as we dance or perform pole tricks.  In fact, every pole trick is based upon a.) a fundamental grip, brace or hook b.) understanding the push/pull forces required to achieve and sustain a pole trick and c.) knowing how our bodies should be positioned in relation to the pole.

Proper fundamentals allow us to:

1. recruit the proper muscles for each skill in a way that maximizes our strength, ensures joint integrity & our physical safety

2. dance with aesthetically beautiful, clean lines

3. generate push/pull forces to create resistance and stability

4. generate spin impulse and sustain a spin using centrifugal force

5. create fulcrums that support static poses whether we’re upright or inverted

6.utilize pivot points for turns and spirals

TECHNIQUE: Once we’ve mastered the “alphabet” (fundamentals), technique is like learning to create basic wordsandsentences. It’s our ability to move skillfully and efficiently, step-by-step.  And that’s an ideal way to begin learning pole tricks; progressively building strength, coordination, confidence and muscle memory with basic skills that focus on alignment and technique.

Good, clean technique allows us to:

1. master the basics of pole dancing

2. build a foundation of strength, stability, coordination and control

3. develop the necessary skills and muscle memory before advancing to more challenging pole skills

4. seamlessly transition from one move into the next

5. dance with aesthetically beautiful, clean lines

ARTISTRY: Artistry is just as significant as fundamentals and technique. It’s the part of our pole dance training where we learn to turn sentences (technique) into whole paragraphs and eventually stories by adding our own self-expression.  It’s about discovering our unique “selves” by exploring our own organic movement without judgement, comparisons or preconceived ideas.  It’s about allowing ourselves to get lost in the experience of unifying our movements with music to create a mood, feeling, character or story with depth of emotion.

Developing artistry allows us to:

1. infuse our technical skills with our personalities

2. create our own individual style

3. get out of our head and experience the feeling of each movement

4. interpret the rhythms, mood and emotions of the music we’re dancing to

5. evoke a meaningful and emotional response from an audience which is part of the beauty and magic of creating art.

6. turn pole dancing into a cathartic experience for us, even when no one is watching.

When it comes to developing athletic and artistic pole skills at an advanced level, the basics matter.  In fact, no matter how “advanced” we are as pole dancers, it never hurts to go back and fine-tune the basics.  Sometimes we have to ignore our overly ambitious egos that are dying to create intricately detailed stories and simply return to the alphabet.
